For those looking to implement sustainable living into their homes, Narelle Peart from Scott’s Osmocote has shared her top five ways to make a more eco-friendly backyard:

Grow your own: Nothing is more sustainable than growing your own fruit and vegetables at home. Be sure to use seasonal seeds for the best produce and invest in a quality potting mix to make sure your veggies are the best on the block. Invest in a quality potting mix with the Australian Standard red tick, which ensures that the mix has been manufactured to comply with Australian Standards.

Growing your own fresh seasonal produce is a simple and sustainable way to save on expensive produce that often comes packaged in plastic and may have been exposed to pesticides. You’ll be able to pick the veggies you need for dinner without having to leave your house.

Compost your waste and use it for your garden: Turning your food scraps into compost instead of throwing them into landfill is one of the most affordable ways to make your home more sustainable.

Composting is not a new trend, but it is a great way to cut down on household waste and feed your garden at the same time. Not only is composting eco-friendly, it’s a free way to improve the quality of your soil and give your plants a boost of nutrients. Just remember to layer your garden clippings and kitchen scraps for the best compost.

Create a home for bees: Create a home for bees by growing a wide variety of native plants. Not only do native plants require less water than others, they will also attract much needed bees and butterflies into your neighbourhood. Having bees around will help out your own plants, but they will also gather nectar and pollen from plants right throughout the area, benefiting the whole neighbourhood.

Solar-powered garden lighting: Make your garden as beautiful in the night time as it is in the daytime with solar garden lighting. You do not need to wire them in your house or use extension cords that run on electricity, just place them in a sunny area to charge throughout the day. Not only is it easy to find a style that suits your garden, solar-powered lights come in a range of styles and colours to create a beautiful and elegant atmosphere.

Water morning or night: Make the most out of your watering by giving plants a feed before 10am or after 4pm, when the air is cooler and much less water will be lost to evaporation. Watering your garden when the sun is not at its highest will allow the most water to penetrate into the soil.

To ensure you use as little water as possible, invest in a wetting agent that will help your grass and garden soak up the precious water that you give it and use only recycled water caught from your showers. If you’re lucky enough to have grey water, water to your heart’s content.

Recycle with REDcycle: Recycle your old plastic bags, bread bags and cereal linings with REDcycle. Simply ensure they are dry and as empty as possible before dropping off at the nearest REDcycle location which will see your old potting mix bags sent straight to the company’s partner, Replas. This process will stop the amount of old plastic bags being sent to landfill and instead, used towards creating outdoor furniture, signage and even fitness circuits.
