NEW! If you’re struggling, there’s a Facebook support group. See link below. *** The fact is that U.S. physicians rarely tell their patients about “Benzodiazepine Withdrawal”, and the (very likely) long-term effects from just a few months of daily use.
Firstly, NEVER stop taking any medication without your doctors advice, or without a second doctor’s opinion!!! If your doctor won’t work with you, find another if you can.
The vast majority of doctors are not evil, but most have been terribly misled by pharmaceutical sales-people, who are actually trained to minimize the known side effects of drugs like benzos, so that the doctor feels as comfortable as possible, while too often casually prescribing these highly addictive medications to their trusting patient, who are simply following their doctor’s orders.
Until the million-plus patients prescribed these medications discontinue them, no one will ever really know how tragic this problem really is. http://www.justice.gov/dea/concern/benzodiazepines.html
If you think you have an anxiety disorder, do your research on any medication your doctor might recommend, and ask your doctor about withdrawal effects, and non-medication alternatives before doing so! (Read this – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benzodiazepine_withdrawal_syndrome )
I was prescribed Klonopin for 3 years, then Ativan for 4 years (high daily dosage), and am currently 13 months post a ridicules 6 day taper (after legal worries by my doctor, who said he was “not an expert at Benzodiazepine detox”), and still struggling with twice the anxiety, and numerous neurological issues (muscular twitches/vertigo/high heart rate/BP), which I never had prior being prescribed these Benzodiazepine family (benzos) of drugs for “situational (job) stress.”

This is NOT a “patient problem”, but a pharmaceutical, and physician ignorance (or arrogance) problem! Were this not a serious issue, tens of thousands of benzo withdrawal sufferers wouldn’t be posting their stories! If you’re one of us, and on Facebook, please feel free to join our Facebook support group (with live member chat), at “Benzodiazepine (Benzo) Withdrawal Support Group”. The link of which is,

ADDENDUM – JUNE 11, 2011 – To touch base, and give some hope to those in hell, I’m now 13 months past a medically supervised 6 day taper from benzos. Yes, 6 day taper after 7 years of high dose prescribed use, which was criminal. But at 6 months, I finally began to see changes of normalcy, which now find me at about 80{0ad59209ba3ce7f48e71d4a0dc628eee9b107ea7079661ded2b3bda89b047a8b} of normal. (2 to 4 on the anxiety 10 scale, which was an eleven my first four months, I BS you not.
So though we’re all different, with different circumstances & physiology, there is hope. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask, as no one should ever be dumped as I was, by their doctor, or even ER. Though you don’t notice it, you are getting just a little bit better every day! Hang in there!
